Teacher Presents at Georgia Council for the Social Studies Conference

According to the Monroe County Schools website, Jana Peacock, Mary Persons High School Teacher, presented "Creative Projects for Teaching World History - Now with Rubrics!" at the recent Georgia Council for the Social Studies Conference in Athens, Ga.

Peacock gave a presentation of how to teach World History using project-based learning, rather than through lecture.

Monroe Co. Sheriff's Office: Teenager Cries Robbery After Stealing Cars

A Monroe County teenager lied about being robbed after he led deputies on a foot chase and stole a car early Saturday, according to the Monroe Co. Sheriff's Office.

A news release says 18-year-old Michael Chase Bower is charged with burglary, theft by taking of a motor vehicle and theft by taking.

Deputies first responded to an alarm at The Market Place in Bolingbroke around 4:30 a.m., the release says.  When deputies arrived, they spotted Bower running from the store to a vehicle parked behind the building.

The release says deputies chased Bower as he ran on foot across Highway 41, and into the woods where deputies lost sight of him.  Deputies say they later found Bower at a nearby home where he had knocked on the door and told the people inside that he had been robbed. 

Plastics Company Will Move to Forsyth

An Ohio plastics company will locate in Forsyth, eventually bringing 100 jobs to Monroe County, according to Gov. Sonny Perdue.

Encore Plastics Corporation of Sandusky will locate a distribution and manufacturing operation, said a news release from the governor's office.

The company will manufacture and distribute various paint-related packaging items, along with industrial pails, Perdue's office says.

Encore Plastics will  begin operation in the first quarter of 2011 with 25 employees and hopes to eventually hire up to 100.

The company will move into a 60,000-square-foot building already constructed, at 165 Industrial Park Road, and use it as a distribution warehouse.

The governor's news release quotes Encore Plastics president Craig Rathbun as saying that the city's location on I-75 makes it an attractive site for delivering their products to customers in the Southeast.

 

Christmas Parade Scheduled

On. Thursday Dec. 2, a Christmas Parade is scheduled to take place in Downtown Forsyth at 7 p.m.

Parole Association of Georgia to Announce Awards

The Parole Association of Georgia (PAOG) will announce its annual awards at a luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19.

Awards to be announced will include: Volunteer service award, Distinguished Service Award Non-Post Certified, Distinguished Service Award Post-Certified, Employee of the Year for each region and Parole Office of the Year.

The PAOG is a training organization that supports parole employees of the State Board of Pardons and Paroles. The organization has a membership of more than 200 people.

Great American Smokeout

The Great American Smokeout is Thursday, Nov. 18, according to the American Cancer Society website.

This year marks American Cancer Society's 35th Great American Smokeout and the organization uses the specified date as a day to make a plan to quit or plan in advance to plan on quitting on the Great American Smokeout day itself.

According to The American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout website, the event grew out of a 1971 event in Randolph, MA, when "Arthur P. Mullaney asked people to give up cigarettes for a day and donate the money they would have spent on cigarettes to a high school scholarship fund."

The first national Great American Smokeout was held in 1977.
