From the Monroe County Extension Office:

The workshop will be held on Tuesday, December 20th. Well water samples to be tested for uranium will be accepted from 5:30 - 6:00 pm at a cost of $15.00.  At 6:00 the workshop will begin with Jake Mowrer from the University of Georgia and Dana Lynch with Monroe County Extension as the speakers.  Please pass the word to friends and families who might be interested in this informative meeting.  The upcoming workshop will be held at the Old School House located at the corner of Church Street and Lockett Streets in Culloden, GA.

A Uranium/Radon Workshop will be held in Culloden.  Uranium has been in the news recently because some residents have had their well water test for high levels of uranium here in Monroe County.  As you may know, uranium is a naturally occurring radioactive element found in some rocks and groundwater that can be in private wells in Georgia north of the Fall Line that are at least 100 feet deep.  It can make its way into drinking water where it can be harmful to health.  The only way to determine if there is uranium in the water is by testing.  Radon is something else to consider when uranium is found.  Radon is a decomposition product of uranium.  If radon is present the air filters through the basement and can allow the radon gas to enter the home.  Radon can also be in the well water as well.  It is recommended that well owners with elevated uranium levels also test their homes for radon gas.
