Pastor raising $1 per mile to build a decent home in Forsyth

Christ United Methodist Church of Forsyth presented Darrell Watson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Forsyth, a check for $150 on Jan. 16 in support of his Ironman fundraiser for Monroe County Habitat for Humanity. Watson is training for the Ironman competition in Woodlands, Texas, on May 17 and is asking groups, individuals, and businesses to pledge $140.60 toward construction of the next Habitat for Humanity home in Monroe County in support of his endeavor.

Labor services come to Monroe Co.

The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) began providing employment-related workshops in Monroe County Jan. 9 at the new Monroe County Workforce Development Center, 89 Washington Dr., Forsyth.

The workshops are provided by a GDOL business services recruiter from 10 a.m. to 12 noon on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Workshop topics will include completing applications and resume writing.

MLK to get new memorial at Ga. State Capitol

ATLANTA (WXIA) -- After more than 80 years as the Georgia State Capitol's most prominent statue, the likeness of 19th century white supremacist politician and newspaperman Tom Watson was quietly removed the day after Thanksgiving.

That prompted some civil rights leaders to ask that it be replaced with a statue of Martin Luther King, Jr.

State Representative Tyrone Brooks (D-Atlanta) even introduced a bill to make it happen.
