Putnam Co. man pleads guilty to possession of a firearm


An Eatonton man entered a guilty plea Thursday for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in a Macon district court.

Christian MacKean, 37, was driving a pick-up truck in August of 2013 when he was pulled over in Monroe County for speeding, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's office. He refused to show his driver's license or his insurance card, the release states. McKean reached for something and the officer who stopped him noticed a bulge under his shirt, the release states, and suspected there was a weapon. The officer called for backup.

Neighbors fight against Monroe County garage burglaries

Some Monroe county homeowners are working to protect their belongings after a string of burglaries over the past month.

According to the sheriff's office, people are reporting stolen lawn equipment and tools from garages and carports.

It's happened on Camden Way, Highway 83 North, Popes Ferry Road and Estes Road, sometimes while people are home.

The sheriff's office is asking people to lock their garages and sheds.

Mitch Stanovich says he's not one of the victims, but that people in the neighborhood still need to take precautions.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says they're looking for an escaped state prison inmate.

The inmate reportedly took off from the city-owned Forsyth Golf Club sometime Wednesday. A Monroe County dispatcher would not say what the inmate was doing at the golf club.

Viewers told 13WMAZ that the search began sometime Wednesday afternoon, as helicopters circled the area near the golf course.

The death of a 5-year-old at a Forsyth home this week has been ruled a homicide.

That's according to GBI spokeswoman Sherry Lang.

She said an autopsy found that Heaven Woods died from a blunt-force trauma to the abdomen.
