Healthy Habits Program Gets Local Footing

Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) received a grant from the United State Department of Agriculture (USDA) to implement a nutrition and physical activity program in Central Georgia, a Bright from the Start news release says.

Through the “Caregivers Promoting Healthy Habits: Implementing Wellness Policies in Child Care Centers in Georgia,” Bright from the Start will provide 38 early care and education centers in 42 middle Georgia counties with assistance in developing and implementing wellness policies that encourage healthy eating and physical activity for children ages zero to five years.

The selected centers will receive up to $3,000 in the form of sub-grants to support wellness activities.

The workshop will be held on Tuesday, December 20th. Well water samples to be tested for uranium will be accepted from 5:30 - 6:00 pm at a cost of $15.00.  At 6:00 the workshop will begin with Jake Mowrer from the University of Georgia and Dana Lynch with Monroe County Extension as the speakers.  Please pass the word to friends and families who might be interested in this informative meeting.  The upcoming workshop will be held at the Old School House located at the corner of Church Street and Lockett Streets in Culloden, GA.

  • Troup Corn, Laurens County: Features corn maze, hay ride, pumpkin patch and a mini-maze. Call 478-272-8170. Opens Saturday, Sept 24.
  • Twin Oaks Fun Farm, Monroe County. Features pumpkins and a corn maze. Open Oct. 1-Oct. 31
  • Our Cotton Pickin' Christmas Tree Farm, Hawkinsville. Check their Facebook page for updates.Pick your own pumpkin from the patch. Also enjoy cider or cocoa on the porch while the kids climb the hay mountain. Open 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Don't forget the downtown Farmers Market opens Saturday from noon until 6 p.m.

If you want to set up a table, the fee is $5.

Friday Means Farmers Market

The Forsyth Farmers Market happens Friday at noon.

A weekly farmers market of local farmers with Georgia produce ranging from peaches, cabbage and tomatoes to honey and preserves. The weekly fee is only $5 for farmers to set up.
