Monroe County Schools Dismiss Early for Game Day
News

Forsyth is painting the town gold and black to support Mary Persons football team.

It might be a dreary day, but there's enough bulldog spirit to light up the city

Well, at least there is at The Prime Palate, Pizza Hut and even Dairy Queen.

"We're all for the football team and glad they made it as far as they had and hope they'll win this Friday," says Jonathan Butts who works at The Prime Palate.

Frank Lucas, a cook at Pizza Hut, adds," If they make this one, they're going to the dome. I hope they make it to the dome."

"This is a big deal. The team here probably hasn't been to that level in awhile," says Alan Ralph, owner of Sharp Framing and Art in downtown Forsyth.

It's such a big deal that all Monroe County Schools will be let out early at 12:30 on game day.

The Mary Persons High School football team will be playing in the quarter finals.

They'll be battling it out with Ridgeland High School in Rossville. That's just outside Chattanooga on the Georgia-Tennessee line.

"Oh yea, we go from one end of the state back to the other ," says Cindy Taylor on game days. She makes the long drive because her daughter is in the band.

"I always go to all the games, but I'm not going to this one, Friday, too far. I ain't got the money to go," says Lucas.

The early dismissal will give students ample time to make the four hour drive to cheer on the dawgs.

Although there was an overwhelmingly positive response, there were some mixed reviews on Facebook.

We received over 90 comments on our page with several saying education should be the priority and that the dismissal is an inconvenience to working parents.

But word on the street is bulldog fever is catching on.

"Physical education is just as important as the arts," says Ralph.

Monica Clayton, owner of Smart Shops on the Square, says, "I'm really impressed with the amount of support the kids get, not being from a small town, it's not something I've experienced."

Friday's game starts at 7:30 pm.
