My Teacher Is Tops: Daniel Carpenter

This week's my teacher is tops winner is a math teacher at T.G. Scott Elementary school in Forsyth who brings math into the real lives of students.

Daniel Carpenter says he was surprised when 13WMAZ said one of his students sent a letter saying that Carpenter was his favorite teacher.

"Utter shock, I think you'll probably be able to tell my expression that I didn't exactly know what was going on," said Carpenter.

Carrington Hughes sent us the letter, and she said what makes Carpenter one of her favorite teachers is that he makes math fun and he cares about his students.

"He explains it for you, and he understands it's not, sometimes it's not easy knowing stuff like right away," said Hughes.

Carpenter said he tries to use real life situations to explain math to show students that math is everywhere.

"I want the students to realize that math is more than just a problem on a page more than just a lesson in a text book," said Carpenter. "I want them to know that math is not a foreign subject that only I know that I'm trying to convey to them it happens around them at all times."

"He has different strategies than my other math teachers and he teaches us more like a different way to solve it," said Zikira Benjamin, one of Carpenter's students.
