Garbage Pickup Changes in Forsyth | News
If you live in Forsyth, you're currently paying $20 a month for garbage pickup. By May, you'll be paying $5 less. And all you have to do is switch out the garbage cans.
Garbage pickup will no longer be Forsyth's problem, because the city contracted with Advanced Disposal of Macon for trash pickup.
"Right now we are running three garbage trucks and we're picking it up two days a week," says city administrator Thomas White.
Prices and days will be slashed. Residents will pay $15 a month instead of $20.
"Any time you talk less money these days it's better," says Freddy Butts, owner of The Prime Palate.
Trash will be disposed once a week.
For older residents unable to carry garbage to the curb, backdoor pickup will still be offered. Residents just need to bring a doctor's note to City Hall.
"We're not eliminating any positions. We're taking all the workers currently working in sanitation and moving them over to the street department," says city council member Eric Wilson.
Routes and details for commercial customers have yet to be determined.
"Do you need two of the 96-gallon containers? Do you need to share a dumpster, do you need a dumpster of your own and they'll customize that for them," Wilson says. These are the types of questions Advanced Disposal will ask of commercial owners.
Butts says he depends on clean cans every day.
"We empty at least six 55-gallon trash bags a day," he says.
Butts says he likes the personalized service the city provides and hopes that it isn't wasted.
"We can call City Hall now and say we have extra trash and a truck will come around and pick it up. We really don't have to call and ask, they'll just come by on a routine basis just to make sure," says Butts.
Changes are expected to start by May 1st. Residents will receive 96- gallon containers on wheels and will also be notified what day.
White says if the city continues to provide garbage collection services residents will have to pay an increased price of about $35 a month.
