NORAD: No fighter escorts for Santa this year

NORAD: No fighter escorts for Santa this year

As it has every year since 1955, the North American Aerospace Defense Command will be tracking Santa on his whirlwind journey to deliver presents to all the good little boys and girls around the world.

But he won't be escorted by armed fighter jets.

When NORAD recently launched its yearly online Santa tracker, the site featured a video showing the jolly old elf being escorted by U.S. fighter jets "bristling with missiles," as the Boston Globe put it.

That caused a minor earthquake in the Twitterverse about why Santa would need an armed escort. The answer: Russia.

But a NORAD spokesman confirmed to Military Times that the "missiles" are actually fuel tanks.

2 Killed in Sunday Morning Accident on I-75

Two people were killed on Interstate 75 northbound in Monroe County this weekend.

Allison Willis, public information officer for the Monroe County sheriff's office, says it happened around 5 a.m. Sunday near the Pate Road overpass.

She says Eddrick Goddard, 20, lost control of a Ford Crown Victoria after a tire blew.  The car hit the guardrail and flipped several times.

All four people in the car were ejected.

Willis says Reginald Patterson Jr., 20,  and Jarvis Dumas, 22, died in the wreck.

Goddard and Shavar Traylor, 30, were taken to the Medical Center of Central Georgia with non-life threatening injuries.

Willis says seat belts were not in use at the time of the wreck.
