DOT Anticipates Holiday Travel Delays

The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) anticipates more travelers than usual with Christmas Day falling on a Saturday this year.

High congestion areas include I-75, I-16, and I-475 in Bibb County, the DOT release says.

“We anticipate heavy traffic throughout the metro Atlanta area beginning Thursday around noon” said Georgia DOT Commissioner Vance C. Smith, Jr. “Mall and retail center traffic will be particularly congested. Additionally, many travelers will be returning home over the weekend.”

Motorists should expect congestion near malls and retail centers throughout the week leading up to Christmas Day.

The DOT will suspend construction-related lane closures on all interstates and state routes from noon Thursday, Dec. 23 through Monday, Dec. 27 at 5 a.m.

Call 511 on any phone for free, real-time traffic information.

Shop with Law Enforcement Event

The Macon Fraternal Order of Police (MFOP) Lodge #3 will host its annual "Shop with Law Enforcement" starting on Dec. 14.

Each year, the MFOP sponsors three Christmas "Shop with Law Enforcement" events where MFOP members take a child shopping for whatever they want for Christmas.

The program is designed for children who would otherwise not receive anything for Christmas.

According to MFOP Lodge #3 Secretary Dennis Pace, the MFOP will sponsor about 100 children in Macon at Walmart on Dec. 14, about 50 children in Perry on Dec. 15 and about 50 children in Milledgeville on Dec. 16.

The children will be allowed to spend $100 on whatever they choose in Walmart.

In previous years, the program was known as "Shop with a Cop," but has since been changed to incorporate other members of the MFOP who are not police officers.
