Monroe County Emergency Services seeking volunteers

Monroe County Emergency Services is looking for help.

They're seeking another ambulance from County Commissioners and volunteer firefighters.

Right now there are three ambulances in the county and about 80 percent of the work force is volunteer.

And they literally have a lot of ground to cover.

Monroe County Emergency Services responds to about 400 square miles.

We spoke with one lieutenant who says the extra help is critical but not always easy to come by.

Standards have gotten stricter over the years and the department now requires volunteer firefighters to complete hundreds of hours of training.

Lieutenant Shane Cook says Monroe County Emergency Services expects 15 new volunteers to graduate in August.

The volunteers started training in January.

"It's not as easy as I guess it was 20,30 years ago where you just raised your hand and said you wanted to help and they just gave you a uniform. Currently our volunteers, they go through 320 hours of firefighter training," Cook said. "They do 40 hours of emergency medical response training. They do 36 hours of hazardous material training."
