Police: I-75 Chase Began with Shoplifting Complaint

A 28-year-old Macon woman is behind bars this morning after leading several law enforcement agencies on a chase through three counties early Thursday morning.

According to a news release, Tabitha Michelle Whitehead has been arrested and charged with felony shoplifting, eluding police, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, failure to obey a traffic control device and driving without a license.

Police say the Walmart on Gray Highway reported a woman stealing four TVs and leaving in a beige Cadillac SUV with vanity plates around 2:40 a.m.

A patrol officer spotted Whitehead's vehicle on a nearby side street but she refused to stop, according to the release. Instead she headed northbound on I-75 towards Monroe County and into Butts County.

She was stopped by Monroe County officers near exit 205 after a tire blew out and she lost control.

The TVs were recovered from Whitehead's SUV and returned to Walmart.

No one else was in the vehicle. Whitehead was attended to by medical personnel at the scene and then taken to the Bibb County jail.
